No .3 Penny Street
Portsmouth
Hampshire
Detailed DescriptionOn the east corner of Penny Street is an absolute masterpiece. Pevsners text was vague in description and finding the building through various streets in Old Portsmouth did prove difficult. However when approaching this building it jumped out and soon realising that it was the building that Pevsner described I explored the exterior. Two storeys and an attic, stucco faced, this 18th century building is very warm and charming in nature. A early timber framed building, with a steep hipped roof that encloses the house fantastically well, in addition the exterior is very well proportioned. There are two hipped dormers in keeping with the design of the tiled roof, this also gives more "weight" to the roof. Four flush sash windows face north west and on the ground floor is an 18th century style bow window with a door incorporated into the frontage. Facing peacock lane is another hipped dormer and four sash windows, there is a distinct separation between the Peacock side and Penny side with the house differing in colour of paint and there is a door of the south west face.
