Lombard Court   PortsmouthPlus    HampshirePlus

Detailed Description

Lombard Court was originally the Electricity Generating Board's Offices. Built in 1963, close the seafront within Old Portsmouth and slightly out of harmony with it. A relatively modern building in Pevsners time, it is far more acceptable than some of the other buildings surrounding it. With the power station no longer existing just beyond the end of Lombard Street, the need for the offices were lost and therefore it has been built into private flats. With five storeys to the building it does not overpower the 18th Century Georgian building opposite. With slate hanging along the fifth storey pulling the building in a more compact elevation, this slate hanging follows down through some of the bays of the building. Again reinforcing the description of building pulling itself down. The building has many windows on all sides due to the amount of rooms that are within the flats. The west front would probably give views out across to Gosport, in the top floors.
